AMORGOS GREECE – THE ISLAND OF INFINITY BLUE
Amorgos – charming and authentic Cycladic Island Remote, magical, imbued with an innate dignity, quality and authenticity, and blessed with the most heartbreakingly beautiful seascapes in Greece, no wonder that the film “Le Grand Bleu” was shot here. The island is a long, narrow, mountainous mass, splintered with ravines, and ram parted with steep, dramatic cliffs on the eastern side plunging down into the blue below, and the azure horizon melting away in the distance. The west coast offers two lovely harbors – Katapola in the south, and Egiali in the north.
The southern mountains and coast are pastoral and gentler, with sheltered sandy beaches and rural villages. The north is wild and stony, crisscrossed with fabulous walking paths and hikes, studded with ridiculously picturesque white-washed villages, donkeys, domed churches and crooked lanes.
Chora, the hilltop capital can absorb visitors for days with its sugar-cube architecture, windmills and little tavernas. There is an Archaeological, a byzantine, and a cultural Museum. There are wind mills, 40 churches, a Venetian castle, and picturesque small coble stone streets and shops. The spectacular Byzantine Monastery of the Hozoviotissa and the magnificent bay of Aghia Anna are within 15 min drive. The lovely mountain villages of Tholaria, Potamos and Langada are within the hiking route of the Aegiali area. Amorgians are characterized by honor, dignity, hospitality, and respect for tradition and integrity.
Amorgos offers plenty to historians as well – connected to Minoan Crete, some of the most important finds of the 3rd millennium BC were found here, notably the stone figurines now displayed in the Athens Museum of Cycladic Art.
Getting there
The easiest and cheapest way to get to Amorgos, which was taking a Blue Star ferry from Piraeus Port. It takes around 7 hours to get there but that’s because it stops at 4 or 5 other islands which makes it very excitement journey. It is a big adventure for families with children to enjoy any moment in this sailing.
If you’re already on some other Greek island you can check out ferryhopper.gr for tickets. Just make sure you book your tickets in advance as especially during August many ferries are full. From the Island Santorini it is only 2 hours by Ferry.
