The beauty of the Peloponnese on the way from Athens to the villas

The Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal is one of the most unique and touristy destinations in all of Greece. It is a long man-made canal, crossing the Strait of Isthmus in the city of Corinth and connecting the Gulf of Corinth to the Gulf of Saroni. The idea for a canal was conceived by an ancient ruler Prider as early as the 6th century BC, however the Corinth Canal was built between  1881-1893 after Greek independence. The canal is 6,346 meters long (about 6.4 km) and 8 meters deep. The canal shortens the distance from the Adriatic Sea to Piraeus by about 320 km. Three bridges have been built over the canal over the years. One is used to transport trains and two of them to the main road from central Greece to our destination – the Peloponnese. At the ends of the canal there are sunken bridges that are raised above the canal when crossing a vehicle crossing. Visitors will be able to enjoy the great sights that the canal has to offer and even pass by boat in the canal itself. There are also a number of attractions in the area such as a bungee jump from the canal bridge. There are also a number of guided tours throughout the Corinthian area that include a visit to the canal. After observing and touring the Corinth Canal and being impressed by the power of the building, head back up the road and drive about an hour and a bit on the way to the next, no less impressive destination – the Epidaurus Theater.

The ancient theater of Epidaurus

The ancient theater of Epidaurus is a theater located in the Greek city of the same name, which according to legend the city was the birthplace of the Greek god of medicine – Asclepius, son of Apollo the sun god. The theater is located at the southeastern end of a temple entirely dedicated to the god of medicine Asclepius. The Epidaurus Theater is considered to be the oldest preserved Greek theater in the world and was founded in the 4th century BC by the ancient architect, Polyclitus. The extraordinary theater has been preserved in such an amazing and extraordinary way and has survived in the best condition of all the other ancient theaters in Greece that it operates to this day. The theater was built inspired by the glory of beauty, power, architecture and acoustics. Indeed, the structure perfectly meets all four of its elements. The acoustics in the building are so impressive that when a person speaks from the center of the theater stage his voice is heard equally at all ends of the theater. And of course, from every seat in the theater unfolds an amazing view of the entire Epidaurus area.

The theater peaked at about 14,000 seats, and hosted Greek music, singing and drama performances, as well as ancient worship ceremonies. In the past, patients and patients from all over the country would come to watch the various plays performed in the theater, believing that performances had positive effects on the viewer, both in terms of health and mental and physical aspects of patients. Today, the theater attracts a large number of visitors every day, and even serves as a stage for performing ancient drama plays. The first modern performance in the theater was a play about the tragic story of Sophocles in 1938. After this important historical visit, we continue on the way to the magical villas of the Peloponnese. This time, a short drive of about half an hour will take you to one of the most beautiful and ancient cities in Greece.

Nafplio, the first capital of Greece.

Nafplio is located in the northeast of the Peloponnese and is considered one of the most picturesque and romantic cities in Greece.

It is built on a small and magical peninsula in the north of the Bay of Argolis. Nafplio was also the first capital of the Greek state in the first years of its existence, between 1823-1834. According to Greek mythology, the city was founded by Nafplio the son of the sea god Poseidon. The ancient story of the city dates back to prehistoric times when soldiers from the city of Nafplio took part in the famous Trojan War. The city declined in the Roman period but flourished again in the Byzantine period. Many have conquered the city throughout history, Venetians, Turks, Franks, all of whom have left their mark on the city, and have greatly influenced its culture, architecture, and various traditions over the centuries. During the visit to the city, visitors will be able to see ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments and statues, fountains from the Ottoman period, Venetian buildings, and many more. Today, Nafplio is a tourist and peaceful town that is visited by thousands of tourists every year. The alleys in the town are pleasant for wandering and walking, and in the evening there are a number of recommended and excellent taverns. Once a year, during the summer months, a large and invested music festival is held in the city, with the participation of a number of leading international artists, the festival attracts thousands of visitors. It is advisable to spend at least a good few hours visiting the town, in order to enjoy all the sites and attractions it has to offer. At the end of the visit, we continue towards the final destination on the route from Athens, which are the most magical, prestigious, and luxurious villas that the Peloponnese has to offer!
