https://flights.aegeanair.com/en/flights-to-skyros
Or by boat from the port of Kymi: https://www.sne.gr/index-en.php located in central Evia, three hours distance almost from Athens by car. The rest of the spring – summer months there is a relatively good tourist activity but it doesn’t reach the levels of the high season.
Since the summer of 2018 the island receives charters from Vienna city and all in all the number of the arrivals from the Austrian capital is between 900 and 1300 visitors per season. The first charter of 2021 from Vienna is planned to be on the 30th of May and the last on the 19th of September. The second charter that reaches the island has begun in the year 2014 from Paris and it is limited only for the two months of July and August.
Skyros Island is an island that is preferred by a certain category of tourists thanks to its location, its traditional, folkloric customs, its simplicity, its direct connection with the nature and the genuine character of the locals. In other words the people who decide to enjoy their vacation in this island are absolutely conscious of the environment and the given services of Skyros so they don’t expect something more that would automatically give them the sense of a luxury or a non authentic stay. Skyros is exactly what they seek and sometimes this imperfection that someone sees somewhere is just omitted in front of its other overwhelming natural beauties.
The island is divided into two different landscapes.
The northern one stands out with its lush vegetation of cedar and pine trees, the pristine beaches and the virgin forests whilst the southern part captivates with the wild and rocky mountains where hundreds of flora and fauna species find an exquisite shelter like the very known Eleonora’s Falcon (falcoeleonorae), the Skyros wall lizard podarcis gaigeae and an important number of the worldwide remaining species of the free Skyrian horse.
In Skyros Island there are around 80 properties, among them: small and medium size hotel properties up to 100 rooms, apartments, residences, rooms to let or pensions. Bigger properties are not built for the simple reason that they would not suit to the island’s traditional atmosphere and as a result they would not be preferred by the guests. The most known area is called magazia, while the area that is adjacent to magazia is called molos – gyrismata. There, locals and not, enjoy the mouth- watering (!) dishes in the rustic fish taverns made by the best quality bio-Skyrian products.
Skyros local products / dishes include: the thyme honey, the local wine – red, rose, white, the almond candies, the local fava bean, the sour cheese that is called “Ksinotiri”, the gruyère cheese and the high nutritional value called “Skyrian Tarhana” which is a dried food ingredient based on a fermented mixture of grain and yoghurt or fermented milk. Some of the Skyrian tempting dishes are: the goat meat cooked in the kettle with lemon sauce and served either with rice or with potatoes. Every restaurant offers a different combination of it but they are all equally tasty. Other delicious dishes are the lobster with the pasta cooked in a kettle with tomato sauce, the fava beans cooked in a pot and served with olive oil, onion and fennel, or fresh tarhana eaten very hot from the kettle. If someone adds to these dishes the aromatic herbs that grow in the island, then he/she has a complete idea about what we call the perfect dish! Caper, sea fennel, thyme, sage, fennel, wild thyme, rosemary, oregano, mint and many more herbs that the ground offers to this blessed island.
Carnival is the period of year that its visitors have the chance to enjoy the Dionysian festivities of “Yeros – old man and Korela”, who is the woman that surrounds him and dances with him on the sound that the heavy bells make, the bells that the old man wears. The custom lasts three full days and it is the ultimate experience of the year. Those three days are the days before the arrival of the Clean Monday that is the absolute dancing day in the main town, the so called “Chora”, meaning center, town.
